Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Animation Department ranks among best in U.S.

Some good news from the Edinboro Universtiy Alumni Newsletter:

"Edinboro University animation program ranks among best in U.S."

(my photo from CTN Expo in Burbank CA)

My second old Alma Mater Edinboro made a mark in the Top 25 East Coast Animation Schools and Colleges for 2022, going up against heavy hitters such as School of Visual Arts, New York, New York and Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island. Edinboro is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

Nice to know the 'Boro's is still slugging it out, in spite of the Covid lockdown, and the university being merged into the new Pennsylvania Western University with Clarion and California (PA) universities. While my career didn't go as far as distinguished alumni as Bill Waldman or David Filoni, I'm still grateful to Edinboro and the teachers there.

Lightbox Expo photos

Some snapshots from the first Lightbox Expo held at the Pasadena Convention Center. They had a good sized crowd on Friday. It looks like ProCreate from Apple was a major sponsor. Fun time, lots space, many demos going on. The hosts went all out for a big convention. This may be a rival to the CTN Expo this year.

The burning question: who are the organizers of Lightbox?

Jim Demonakos, founder of the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, Washington, and Bobby Chiu, who set up Imaginism Studios in Toronto (Ontario, Canada)

I thought this was going to be a much smaller venue, but animation artists, students, schools, studios and vendors were all in attendance. Good mood, lots of energy there. And I only heard about it through Facebook. This event seemed to be arranged and promoted solely through social media. I was just used to the buzz generated around CTN.

Procreate from Apple had the largest display, promoting their artistic app for the iPad.

Alan Bodner had his table there with his original art, and art from his time as art director at Warner Classic Animation.

Almost continuous demos going on in the hallways...

Wacom, with their latest Cintiq tablets...

Sony pictures, with their Oscar winning
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse!

Warner Brothers Animation Group, and their beloved heroes of old...

ASIFA-Hollywood had a good position with their table...

Netflix, looking for talent, and/or pitches...

And an amazing amount of crowds in the other hall, waiting for demos and lectures!

Again, to me, this convention seemed to come out of the blue.
And yet, it got some decent media coverage:

Some more fun stuff:

From left to right, artwork above by Tuna Bora and Pernille Ørum.

And from left to right, artwork above by Robert Kondo and Stephen Silver.

Why the giant pug means death, maybe because Hasbro has aquired Death Row Records.
Whatever you do, don't stare into its eyes too long!

Good mood, and a great creative vibe!
I applaud Jim Demonakos' and Bobby Chiu's success,
and looking forward to next year.

The new tent was HUGE...

Had some hassles with the rain, and a minor power failure, but it was CTN's largest and most impressive Expo yet. Congrats to Tina Price and everyone!

Animation Guild sends Pizza Planet truck to Rhythm & Hues

No more free grub for the remaining R&H artists working overtime. Cutbacks and stuff. The Animation Guild brought the pizza! (But they didn't use the Pizza Planet truck.)

Some devoted fans re-created the Pizza Planet truck from Toy Story. Sorry, I didn't get their names.
This was next to the Marriott at the 2012 CTN Expo in Burbank. (The Pizza Planet truck copyright Pixar/Disney)

Edinboro University Animation at CTN Expo 2012

Edinboro was at the CTN Expo this year. I had been feeling nostalgic for the old campus last year, but could never find the time or the wheels to get out there when I visited NE Ohio.

Instructor Michael Genz was there; he had moved to Edinboro back in the '90's I believe; had a nice chat with him about the program, and the snow:) Doucette Hall is still the heart of the animation and graphics departments. It even looks like the old cafeteria is still there too.

Anyway, my department chair Dori from Woodbury let me know Edinboro was there. I saw my name on their banner of Distinguished Alumni quite a few times. It gave me a nice boost after feeling worn out from CTN. For modesty's sake, I only posted one close up shot of my name with Warner Bros. and Woodbury; two of my best achievements. Nice to be listed with Bill Waldman from Warner Bros. and Dave Filoni from King of the Hill. (I only did some freelance for Tom T Productions.) Some people say my head was swelled up enough after that;)

CTN Expo, year 2

Here it is-if you're in the business, you're on your way.
If you're not in the business, it's still tough to break in-
or if you're trying to get back in...

The Creative Talent Network Animation Expo 2009

...has left the building. It was fun, met some cool people, and even a few old friends...

But,

How do we help animation people get back to work?
