Innovations in Animation - Part 2 - Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

It's been a hard year. As we start to dig out from under the horrors of 2020 and the Covid pandemic, let's take a moment to get back to my topic of Innovations in Animation. After my first entry from the 1980's, ("Twice Upon A Time") I want to jump forward to the 21st Century. Through the years, Sony Pictures was not my top pick as far as animation or superhero film studios go. But Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature for the studio. I finally saw it on Blu-Ray, and it definitely caught my attention.

Comic book style! Other attempts have been made, with dubious success.

Hand drawn effects over 3D, far advanced from old cell shaders.

Visual Effects Artists Rough Timeline

Here's a rough chart of the visual effects artists and animators I put together during my years at Woodbury University. From what I learned, these are some of the key the people who built the foundations of the computer and traditional animation we have now, and their connections with each other as the film business progressed.

And give a big thanks to organized labor this Labor Day, especially in a business like animation!

Augmented Reality with Animation

Here is my next step in creating basic AR using Unity with Vuforia. I'll see how much of the procedure I can list here.

These video links outline the process much more clearly.

My first successful Augmented Reality test with Unity and Vuforia

After following the tutorial from Playful Technology, I finally was able to get my first success in AR with the Unity game engine, along with the Vuforia software.

Still have a long way to go.

R.I.P. Adam West

Well, whether it be comics, TV or animation, Batman always held my attention. I didn't get the campy attitude of the 1960's TV show, especially when the cliffhanger endings meant to me that the danger was REAL. My parent's chuckling, and rolling their eyes was lost on me. But here's to Adam West who kept a six year old in suspense every Wednesday night on ABC. To me, the Bat-Signal will never go out.

3D print dragon

Finally got my female dragon head. The resolution is a little low,
but it gives the figure an interesting texture.

Sculpted in Maya, "Cassandra" was made in
Woodbury University's Digital Fabrication Lab, kudos to Matt and his crew!

Here is the Dimension UPrint + (SD) unit that did the dirty work.
Super cool! Good modeling experience,
but I need more practice in modeling the interior
to get the proper wall thickness.

She has a few errors on her surfaces, and the eyes
didn't print for some reason. Will have to go over that again.

Matt and William use Rhino software to convert .obj files into .stl (stereo lithography) files.

Have a good summer gang, school starts at the end of August.

3D Printing

After all these years, Herman Bear emerges as a 3D print out!

Still have to clean him up, get the support material out of his mouth.
Kudos to Woodbury University's Digital Fabrication Lab.

We don't have sci-fi replication technology just yet, but we're getting there!

Will update details asap.

Quick bash up of a Tardis with Maya and Mental Ray

Have to get the "Police Box" and other graphics attached, along with door handles and dirt and scratches...

Version_02...

I made my own sign art in Photoshop, rather than swipe it off the internet.
I'll see what else I can add...

CG Buildings in Maya 3D

Here's some quick poly modeling in Maya, I was thinking of the old Ghostbusters' fire station in New York.

I think I'm also beginning to control Mental Ray, at least enough to get the results I want.

Creating Glass Shatter Effect using Maya nCloth

Very handy tutorial on breaking stuff in Maya! This may save the day for the project Woodbury is animating for the Bob Hope airport in Burbank.

Hey, it can't all be doodles and sketches, right? Besides, the Super Bowl isn't holding my attention. Not that I'm a Denver fan, but the game is no fun when when one side gets steamrollered.

Basic City - Basic Mental Ray render

Just some basic polys; simple Physical Sun and Sky in Mental Ray. Gives a fairly dramatic layout, imho.
